Big Brands Selling Unhealthier Foods in Poorer Nations
Hey, did you know? Some of the biggest food brands—like Nestle, PepsiCo, and Unilever—are reportedly selling less healthy products in low-income countries compared to wealthier ones. A recent global report by the Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI) showed that in places like India, these brands' products scored an average Health Star Rating of just 1.8 out of 5, while in richer countries, it’s slightly better at 2.3.
This difference in quality is being highlighted as a "wake-up call" by ATNI’s research director, especially since low-income countries are seeing rising obesity rates. WHO data actually shows that most of the world’s obese population is now in low- and middle-income regions. And although companies like Nestle say they’re committed to nutrition, it’s eye-opening to see how big companies are handling their markets differently based on income level.
